NVIDIA bid to stop new GeForce cards ending up in mining setups

Graphics processing unit designer NVIDIA has announced that it will be reducing the ethereum hash rate on its GeForce RTX 3080, RTX 3070 and RTX 3060 Ti graphics cards which are due to be shipped later this month, to make them less attractive to cryptocurrency miners.

This is to avoid the cards being snapped up for uses other than gaming, the company said in a statement.

"Because NVIDIA GPUs are programmable, users regularly discover new applications for them, from weather simulation and gene sequencing to deep learning and robotics," said Matt Wuebbling, the global head of GeForce Marketing. "Mining cryptocurrency is one of them."

He said these GPUs had originally had a full hash rate, but from now on, they would be labelled with a Lite Hash Rate or LHR identifier which would be in retail product listings or on the box.

{loadposition sam08}Ethereum is a decentralised open-source blockchain that has its own digital currency, Ether, which is used as a platform for other cryptocurrencies and also for execution of decentralised smart contracts.

In February, NVIDIA had reduced the ethereum hash rate of its GeForce RTX 3060 graphics cards which were shipped that month.

"GeForce RTX GPUs have introduced a range of cutting-edge technologies — RTX real-time ray tracing, AI-powered DLSS frame rate booster, NVIDIA Reflex super-fast response rendering for best system latency, and many more — created to meet the needs of gamers and those who create digital experiences," Wuebbling said.

"We believe this additional step will get more GeForce cards at better prices into the hands of gamers everywhere."
